Apple said it recovered a whooping 2,204 pounds of gold from recycled iPhones, iPads and Macs last year which amounts to $40 million worth.
Apart from the stylish design, Gold is used in electronics and devices because of its high resistance to corrosion and high conductivity of Electricity which allows faster transmission of data and processing. Even though silver is more conductive, It’s level of corrosion resistance isn’t up to the task.
Apple said 61 million of 90 million e-waste was in reusable state,with Gold having much amount. But since gold is currently trading at more than $1,200 per troy ounce, it’s among the most valuable materials it pulled from all those old gadget. Other recovered materials include 23 million pounds of steel; 13 million pounds of plastic; 12 million pounds of glass; 4.5 million pounds of aluminum; 3 million pounds of copper; and 6,600 pounds of silver.
The company has designed robots to disassemble 1.2 million phones a year, sorting all their various components.operations have started in California and the Netherlands already.
Way to go Apple….what a tremendous gain!
