What Is PianoForAll?

Piano for All is an online music course on the piano with over 300,000 students. The course was created by Robin Hall, a former cartoonist who left his career in cartoon drawing to focus on teaching piano when his interest in cartoons dropped. Robin said he looked at the forms in which the piano was taught, and he felt it was too stressful for people to learn, so he created an easy form of learning, which he termed learning to play by ear while sight-reading.

Piano for all comes in nine detailed e-books with 200 video lessons and 500 audio tunes that show how to play the piano and what you should know.

These nine e-books are titled:

  • Party Time
  • Blues and Rock N’ Roll
  • Chord Magic
  • Advanced Chords Made Easy
  • Ballad Style
  • Jazz Piano Made Easy
  • Advanced Blues
  • Taming the Classic
  • Speed Learning.

These e-books are interactive and go with Hall’s method of teaching, which says the foundations are important. The course is designed to take students through the step-by-step learning and understanding of the piano. The teaching method is divided into ten sections, where sections 1 – 4 are described as the foundations that hold the core understanding of learning the piano.

The sections cover:

  1. Basic Chords: Understanding the popular party rhythms.
  2. Basic Blues: The rhythms.
  3. Basic Chords: The Speed learning
  4. Advanced Chords, made easy.

These four basics of learning piano have been termed “The Foundation” by Robin Hall, explaining that they lay a strong foundation in learning the piano, as having a strong foundation on rhythm, chords, and basic harmony is fundamental in learning and makes the developmental process easy.

The next six sections of Hall’s method of learning are,

  • Ballad Style: The Standards Improvisation
  • Jazz Made Easy: Standards Improvisation
  • Advanced Blues and Ragtime
  • Classical Sight Reading made easy.
  • Speed Learning: Making the most of the practice
  • Applying the skills learned to any in any style.

The above six methods have been designed as methods to help students build on the foundation they learned in method sections 1 – 4.

What the Course Offers

Piano for all reviews

As mentioned above, the course contains nine e-books that teach you how to play the piano from the basics to the advanced level, and the interesting part is that you can try the methods you learn on either a piano or a keyboard.

Each book is focused on a different aspect of learning the keyboard, and that is what we will be talking about now. Let’s look through what each e-book talks about.

BOOK ONE: PARTY TIME

Party time is the first book of the nine-e-book collection, and it stands as the introduction to what Piano for All is about. It is also the introductory book to learning piano. It starts with teaching you the basics of identifying the keyboards, laying the foundation on rhythms, chords, and ballads, and also teaching you some tricks to composing a good beat that can be played at a party. The teaching also comes with keyboard diagrams and other forms of training to help you better memorize and understand the instructions.

In this book one, there are 10 rhythms and 11 chords that you will learn, which will usher you into book 2. If you follow the teachings correctly, you are expected to comfortably play some popular songs on your own, using what you’ve learned as practices are taught with some popular songs.

BOOK TWO: BLUES & ROCK N’ ROLL

In book two, you will learn how to play blues and rock n’ roll. It will stand as a form for you to develop your knowledge of the chords you’ve already learned from Book One. This Book Two will teach you how to play with your left hand, making you practice more with it than your right hand. You will learn to play beautiful tunes from legendary pianists like Jerry Lee Lewis. You will learn so well that you will be able to play the piano in your sleep. Also, you will learn about the five blues rhythms, how to play them, and the twelve-bar blues.

BOOK THREE: CHORD MAGIC

In Book Three, you will be learning all about chords. It will teach about the different chords in a piano, how to learn them, practice them, and apply the method to play a popular song. You will also learn how to change chords using inversions and learn tricks to memorize all chords. You will see progress in your practice as you study this book and improve your skills while watching Robin Hall play. You will learn about the “Circle of Fifths” in book three, where you will learn to practice all keys.

BOOK FOUR: ADVANCED CHORD MADE EASY

Book four talks about the advanced forms of the chord, like the chord symbols, diminished chords, and cluster chords. You will learn about the chord symbols, how to apply them in your practices, and read the symbols from other songbooks. You will learn the “Manilow Mood,” a piece by Barry Manilow, accompanied by a chart for 80 songs from The Beatles. Providing you a long list of songs you could pick from and play.

BOOK FIVE: BALLAD STYLE

Now that you’ve learned about chords, it is now time for you to start using them to create your own tones. This is where you unlock your creativity and create your own ballad style using the step-by-step method provided. This time, you will focus on using your left-hand chord patterns, learn chord progression, and improvise to create your own, using chords that you’ve learned.

You will come across several Christmas songs that you are familiar with, and you practice on your own.

BOOK SIX: JAZZ PIANO MADE EASY

This book talks about jazz as one of the popular genres in piano and discusses its complexity in simpler ways for easier understanding. It also takes you through the jazz foundation, along with blues, teaching you the four distinct keys of jazz. You will also learn some important tricks for jazz improvisation. You will learn blues sounds and blues chords. As you practice, you will notice that your skills are sharpening. The book rounds up with comprehensive teachings on seventh chords.

BOOK SEVEN: ADVANCED BLUES

While in book two, we looked at Blues, we will be talking about the higher aspect of blues in book seven. This book will build on your knowledge from previous books and match your skills to develop a strong stand in playing and understanding the piano. Another important thing you will learn will be the different devices used in playing blues, like tremolo, slides, and turnarounds.

BOOK EIGHT: TAMING THE CLASSICS

Book eight walks us through reviewing some things we’ve learned before and then perfecting them. We also learn new music symbols and music language. Book eight was created to help you master the classical music tones and be able to perform classic songs.

BOOK NINE: SPEED LEARNING

Book nine is the final book of the course, and while it looked like it was going to be a summary of other books, it has its new teachings about triads, arpeggios, and scales about practicing the piano. It also reminds students about what they’ve previously learned in previous books, helping you incorporate them into speed learning.

Now, let’s discuss the video lessons and the audio lessons available on the Piano for All nine courses.

The Video Lessons on the PianoForAll course

Learning something you can watch as it is done is always easier for some people as it helps their brain develop a picture of what they are expected to do. This is one of the things that makes this course stand out. After reading through and going through images on the e-books, you will also get videos that will help you see what you’ve read in action. This will give the information you’ve learned a more solid ground, and you will not forget it. You will see Hall’s hand playing on the lower keyboard while the upper keyboard will display the notes he is playing; that way, you will know where to place your fingers to achieve a better tone.

Robin Hall provided a total of 200 videos in the e-books.

Audio Lessons

There are 500 audio lessons placed strategically all through the course, just like the videos, to provide students with a better understanding of the tunes to play and learn. The audios are for you to play after learning about a tune so that you will hear what it sounds like before you try it on your piano.

With everything we have talked about so far, it is clear that Piano for All stands as the best way to learn the piano, teaching you the ingenious way.
